Foreign language studies are the best choice for those who are interested in culture, history and particularly language of foreign countries. People who have already had contact with language, like reading and are not afraid of systematic learning are perfect canditates for this major. The grduate of the first cycle (BA) studies is fluent as far as command of language is concerned at a level similar to that of a native speaker. The graduate can boast of broad knowledge of society, culture, literature as well as realities of a foreign language-speaking country. These skills will enable one to move freely on a labour market where the dynamic development of international cooperation entails the demand for numerous specialists who work in firms and institutions cooperating with their foreign partners. The candidates who are willing to take up English studies should know the language at the level which enables them to understand lectures, take notes and actively partcipate in practical English classes. Gained either at school or during the stay abroad, good command of English entitles to take up philological studies in this language The other philologies – Spanish, Russian and German – are addressed to those who would like to start learning foreign language from the begining as well as to those who know it at different levels.

Definitions and quotes

Philology
Philology is the study of language in oral and written historical sources; it is a combination of literary criticism, history, and linguistics. Philology is more commonly defined as the study of literary texts as well as oral and written records, the establishment of their authenticity and their original form, and the determination of their meaning. A person who pursues this kind of study is known as a philologist.
Philology
To live classically and to realize antiquity practically within oneself is the summit and goal of philology.
Friedrich Schlegel, Philosophical Fragments, P. Firchow, trans. (1991) § 147
Philology
Philologists, who chase
A panting syllable through time and space,
Start it at home, and hunt it in the dark,
To Gaul, to Greece, and into Noah's ark.
William Cowper, Retirement (1782)
Philology
Among us, the so-called "higher criticism," which reigns supreme in the domain of philology has also taken possession of our historical literature. This higher criticism has been the pretext for introducing all the anti-historical monstrosities that a vain imagination could suggest. Here we have the other method of making the past a living reality; putting subjective fancies in the place of historical data; fancies whose merit is measured by their boldness, that is, the scantiness of the particulars on which they are based, and the peremptoriness with which they contravene the best established facts of history.
Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Philosophy of History Vol 1 p. 7-8
