1. A well-known company announces its quarterly results. What do you look at?

Revenue growth, margins, debt and the market’s reaction – and whether the share price makes sense. Whether it made a profit. Nothing – I don’t follow that.

2. Would you like to value a company and decide whether its shares are cheap or expensive?

Yes – forecasting its cash flows and comparing it with competitors sounds exciting. Maybe, with a simple method. No.

3. The programme is taught in English, and you’ll analyse companies with students from many countries. How do you feel about that?

Great – financial markets work in English, and comparing views with an international team sharpens my analysis. I can read reports, but presenting in English worries me. I’d rather study in my own language, with people from my own country.

4. How do you feel about following financial news and markets every day?

I’d love to – I find markets fascinating. Now and then. Not interested.

5. A friend wants to put all their savings into one trendy stock. What do you say?

I explain risk and diversification and suggest looking at the company’s numbers first. I tell them it sounds risky. I tell them to go for it.

6. You need to write an investment recommendation and defend it in front of a panel. How do you feel?

Great – I like building an argument backed by numbers. I’d write it, but I’d rather not present it. I’d avoid it.

7. Interest rates go up. How might that affect companies?

Higher borrowing costs, lower valuations and different effects in each sector – I’d want to analyse it. Loans get more expensive. No idea, and I don’t care.

8. How do you feel about building a five-year financial forecast for a company in a spreadsheet?

I’d enjoy it – I like testing what happens when the assumptions change. I’d try if someone showed me how. It sounds tedious.

9. Which future role sounds most like you?

Equity research or investment analyst at a bank or fund, or a corporate finance specialist. Some job in a bank. Something unrelated to finance.

10. What motivates you most to study Financial Analyst?

Learning to analyse companies and markets and making well-founded investment decisions. Finance seems to pay well. I’m not sure it’s for me
