Jagiellonian University in Kraków (UJ) runs Molecular Biotechnology at the Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology as a two-year (four-semester) full-time master’s programme with a general academic profile, taught in English. It is designed for students who already speak English well enough to study in it and who want to deepen their knowledge of the molecular basis of modern biotechnology and apply it in medicine, industry or environmental science.
The core compulsory courses give you in-depth theory and practical skills in:
Practical skills are a key goal of the programme. As part of the Laboratory Practice course, you join a chosen research group at the faculty and carry out your own research project, learning advanced techniques and tools used in biochemistry, cell biology, genetic engineering and microbiology.
The faculty building on the 600th Anniversary Campus in Kraków’s Ruczaj district has well-equipped laboratories, computer rooms and modern research equipment, as well as access to the Natural Sciences Library and comfortable space for study and teamwork. The faculty cooperates with dozens of centres in Poland and abroad and runs research projects with pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.
Graduates understand the molecular basis of how cells and organisms work and can use techniques that influence these processes. This matters in industry, environmental protection and biofuel production, in animal and plant biotechnology, and in diagnosing, preventing and treating diseases – for example through cell and tissue engineering, new targeted drugs or vaccines. The programme prepares you for independent and team work in scientific, research and development, and diagnostic institutions and in biotechnology companies. You can continue at the Doctoral School of Exact and Natural Sciences at UJ.
