Jagiellonian University in Kraków (UJ) runs European Studies as a three-year (six-semester), full-time Bachelor's programme taught in English at the Faculty of International and Political Studies, in the Centre for European Studies of the Institute of European Studies. It is meant for students who already use English well enough to study in it and want to understand the political, social and cultural processes shaping Europe.
The programme is interdisciplinary and looks at Europe as a whole – its politics, societies and cultures. The strongest emphasis is on the institutional architecture of the European Union and its policies, on the EU's relations with other regions and on Europe's role in the world. Alongside this knowledge you practise critical analysis, synthesis and interpretation of what is happening on the continent. Classes use debates, simulations, e-learning modules and your own research projects, so you learn to work both independently and in a team.
All classes are taught in English, and the Faculty brings together students from many countries and cultures. You learn to function in an international environment, to be sensitive to cultural differences and to adapt quickly to a changing global context. Invited experts co-teach some classes.
The international side of the programme includes:
Graduates are prepared for work in the public and private sectors, in non-governmental organisations and in cultural institutions. Specialist knowledge of European integration and of Central and Eastern Europe lets them look for jobs both in their home countries and in Poland – in state and local government, education and the media – as well as in international institutions, especially those connected with European integration, and in think tanks and expert centres.
After the Bachelor's degree you can continue with a Master's programme, including European Studies at UJ, and later at a doctoral school such as the Doctoral School in the Social Sciences.
Did you know? The Faculty's eight-storey building, with four large lecture halls and its own library, stands next to the Jagiellonian Library and Jordan Park.
