10 questions · two minutes

1. You’re building a model to detect lesions on scans, but radiologists disagree about some labels. What do you do?

2. You’ll be working with real patients’ medical data. What’s your approach?

3. Your screening model must choose between more false alarms or more missed cases. How do you decide?

4. The programme is taught in English, with classmates from medicine, engineering and computer science from different countries. How do you see that?

5. A doctor asks why the model flagged a scan as suspicious. How do you respond?

6. Scans come from different hospitals and scanners, and your model works on some but not others. What do you do?

7. How do you feel about designing a clinical validation study for your tool?

8. You come from either medicine or computing, and you’ll need to learn the other side. How do you feel?

9. A diagnostic system makes a mistake and a case is missed. How do you think about it?

10. What motivates you most to pursue a Master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence in Medical Diagnostics?

Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence (AI, also machine intelligence, MI) is intelligence demonstrated by machines, in contrast to the natural intelligence (NI) displayed by humans and other animals. In computer science AI research is defined as the study of "intelligent agents": any device that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of successfully achieving its goals. Colloquially, the term "artificial intelligence" is applied when a machine mimics "cognitive" functions that humans associate with other human minds, such as "learning" and "problem solving".
Intelligence
Intelligence has been defined in many different ways to include the capacity for logic, understanding, self-awareness, learning, emotional knowledge, reasoning, planning, creativity, and problem solving. It can be more generally described as the ability to perceive or infer information, and to retain it as knowledge to be applied towards adaptive behaviors within an environment or context.
Intelligence
We should take care not to make the intellect our god; it has, of course, powerful muscles, but no personality.
Albert Einstein, "The Goal of Human Existence", Out of My Later Years (1956), p. 260
Artificial Intelligence
The techniques of artificial intelligence are to the mind what bureaucracy is to human social interaction.
Terry Winograd (1991) "Thinking Machines: Can there be? Are we?"
Intelligence
Each generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went before it, and wiser than the one that comes after it.
George Orwell, in a review of A Coat of Many Colours: Occasional Essays by Herbert Read, Poetry Quarterly (Winter 1945).
