Field of studies Databases (studies in Polish) - Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology (Polsko-Japońska Akademia Technik Komputerowych), PJATK (Warsaw) - Management - Bachelor's and Master's programmes in Poland

1. Your phone is full of hundreds of photos, notes and contacts in no particular order. What do you do?

Come up with a system – folders, tags, consistent names – so I can find anything quickly. Tidy up only what I happen to be looking for. Leave it – I’ll find things somehow.

2. Your school club asks you to keep track of members, fees and attendance. How do you go about it?

Set up a spreadsheet or simple database with separate tables for people, meetings and payments, so nothing gets duplicated. Put everything in one big table. Jot things down on scraps of paper when I remember.

3. How do you feel about maths, especially logic and sets?

I enjoy it – I get a real kick out of seeing one step follow from another. I get by, though it’s not my passion. I avoid it whenever I can.

4. Technical documentation, classes and team projects will all be in English, with teammates from different countries. How does that sound?

Great – most documentation and developer forums are in English anyway, and working in an international team is good preparation for the job. I’ll manage, though technical discussions in English will be a stretch. I’d rather study only in my own language.

5. An online shop’s search keeps showing products that are out of stock. What goes through your mind?

I wonder where it gets its data from and why the stock levels aren’t updating in real time. I assume it’s a glitch and keep browsing. I close the tab and don’t give it another thought.

6. Have you ever tried coding or writing spreadsheet formulas?

Yes – I love it when a few lines automatically crunch a whole load of data. A little, at school, but without much enthusiasm. No, and it doesn’t really appeal to me.

7. A friend asks for help because someone accidentally overwrote important data in his spreadsheet. What do you suggest for next time?

Regular backups, limiting who can edit, and checks on what gets entered. Be more careful when editing. Nothing – these things just happen.

8. You hear about a personal data leak from a big website. How do you react?

I want to know how it happened and how data like that should be protected. Change my password and leave it at that. It doesn’t interest me.

9. You’re faced with a table of thousands of rows and need to spot a particular pattern. How do you feel?

Intrigued – I filter, sort and look for a quick way to pull out the answer. A bit overwhelmed, but I work through it row by row. Put off – I ask someone else to do it.

10. What motivates you most to study Databases?

The chance to design systems that organise and protect the data that apps and businesses rely on. Good job prospects in IT. I’m not sure it’s for me
