⇑Why study Cognitive Science – Technology, Communication, Design at the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology?

Dlaczego warto studiować w Polsko-Japońskiej Akademii Technik Komputerowych
Why study it:

Cognitive Science – Technology, Communication, Design is a full-time Bachelor's programme at the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology (PJAIT), lasting three years (six semesters). It is for people who want to combine technology with an understanding of how people think, communicate and use digital products.

Programme: six contextual pathways

The curriculum is interdisciplinary and modular. Courses are grouped into thematic pathways developed over several semesters:

  • Cognitive Information Processing – information theory, behavioural economics, psychometrics and neuroscience in a technological context.
  • Artificial Intelligence and Data Science – a gradually built toolkit for working with AI and data.
  • Digital Media and Culture – technology placed in a wider social setting, with attention to Japanese cultural traditions and its media market.
  • Technology Market – creating and prototyping new technological solutions for a digital, knowledge-based economy.
  • Digital Content – designing and building solutions with modern software.
  • IT Tools and Cybersecurity – hardware, cloud computing, the Internet of Things and security.

Specialisation: two tracks in the final year

After the fourth semester you choose courses within one of two specialisation tracks, taught in semesters five and six. Service, Product and Experience Design focuses on designing complete digital services and products, with an emphasis on usability, aesthetics and technology. Interaction and Interface Design concentrates on communication between people and computers, interfaces and user experience, sensory and emotional interaction, ergonomics and the design of digital environments.

Languages: optional Japanese from scratch

Free Japanese classes are open to you once you have completed the first semester. The course starts from the very beginning, so no previous knowledge is needed, and intensive English instruction runs throughout your studies.

After graduation: roles in digital products and communication

The programme is shaped by the needs of the digital market, which looks for versatile specialists. Graduates can work as product owner, product manager, brand manager, communication manager, account manager or digital content creator, in established companies and in start-ups.

If you lean towards research or analysis, you can continue in the second- and third-cycle programmes at PJAIT.

⇑Definitions and quotes

Cognitive Science
Cognitive science is the interdisciplinary, scientific study of the mind and its processes. It examines the nature, the tasks, and the functions of cognition (in a broad sense). Cognitive scientists study intelligence and behavior, with a focus on how nervous systems represent, process, and transform information. Mental faculties of concern to cognitive scientists include language, perception, memory, attention, reasoning, and emotion; to understand these faculties, cognitive scientists borrow from fields such as linguistics, psychology, artificial intelligence, philosophy, neuroscience, and anthropology. The typical analysis of cognitive science spans many levels of organization, from learning and decision to logic and planning; from neural circuitry to modular brain organization. The fundamental concept of cognitive science is that "thinking can best be understood in terms of representational structures in the mind and computational procedures that operate on those structures."
Communication
Communication (from Latin commūnicāre, meaning "to share") is the act of conveying intended meanings from one entity or group to another through the use of mutually understood signs and semiotic rules.
Design
Design is the creation of a plan or convention for the construction of an object, system or measurable human interaction (as in architectural blueprints, engineering drawings, business processes, circuit diagrams, and sewing patterns). Design has different connotations in different fields (see design disciplines below). In some cases, the direct construction of an object (as in pottery, engineering, management, coding, and graphic design) is also considered to use design thinking.
Science
Science (from Latin scientia, meaning "knowledge") is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe.
Technology
Technology ("science of craft", from Greek τέχνη, techne, "art, skill, cunning of hand"; and -λογία, -logia) is first robustly defined by Jacob Bigelow in 1829 as: "...principles, processes, and nomenclatures of the more conspicuous arts, particularly those which involve applications of science, and which may be considered useful, by promoting the benefit of society, together with the emolument [compensation ] of those who pursue them" .
Design
If the chief rules of good design were understood by the masses as they might be, nothing would do more to promote beauty, improve workmanship, add to the value of manufactures, and in many other ways further the general welfare and prosperity of the country. They are simple, easy to acquire, and should be taught with the alphabet.
Ernest Flagg, Small Houses: Their Economic Design and Construction (1922)
Technology
Incorrigible humanity, therefore, led astray by the giant Nimrod, presumed in its heart to outdo in skill not only nature but the source of its own nature, who is God; and began to build a tower in Sennaar, which afterwards was called Babel (that is, 'confusion'). By this means human beings hoped to climb up to heaven, intending in their foolishness not to equal but to excel their creator.
Dante Alighieri, De vulgari eloquentia, Chapter VII
Design
Design is redesign.
Jan Michl (2002), in "On seeing design as redesign" (Scandinavian Journal of Design History 12, 2002: 7-23.)
