Find out if Medical Physics is the right major for you!

1. Are you fascinated by applying physics and quantitative methods to healthcare and medical technologies?

2. Do you enjoy learning and using mathematics, signal processing, and imaging physics (e.g., X-ray, MRI, radiation dosimetry)?

3. Are you interested in ensuring the safety and accuracy of medical diagnostic and therapeutic devices?

4. Do you enjoy working with instrumentation, calibration, and troubleshooting complex systems?

5. Are you comfortable communicating technical findings to medical professionals and collaborating in clinical environments?

6. Do you enjoy analyzing data to extract meaningful information and validate system performance?

7. Are you motivated by solving real-world problems that have direct impact on patient care?

8. Are you willing to adhere to strict ethical standards and safety protocols required in medical settings?

9. Are you interested in using computational modeling or simulations to predict system behavior?

10. Do you want to keep learning as medical technologies and diagnostic methods evolve?

Definitions and quotes

Medical Physics
Medical physics (also called biomedical physics, medical biophysics or applied physics in medicine) is, generally speaking, the application of physics concepts, theories and methods to medicine or healthcare. Medical physics departments may be found in hospitals or universities.
Physics
Physics (from Ancient Greek: φυσική (ἐπιστήμη), translit. physikḗ (epistḗmē), lit. 'knowledge of nature', from φύσις phýsis "nature") is the natural science that studies matter and its motion and behavior through space and time and that studies the related entities of energy and force. Physics is one of the most fundamental scientific disciplines, and its main goal is to understand how the universe behaves.
Physics
Physics is to be regarded not so much as the study of something a priori given, but rather as the development of methods of ordering and surveying human experience. In this respect our task must be to account for such experience in a manner independent of individual subjective judgement and therefor objective in the sense that it can be unambiguously communicated in ordinary human language.
Niels Bohr, "The Unity of Human Knowledge" (October 1960)
Physics
As soon as we venture on the paths of the physicist, we learn to weigh and measure, to deal with time and space and mass and their related concepts, and to find more and more our knowledge expressed and our needs satisfied through the concept of number, as in the dreams of Plato and Pythagoras.
D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson, On Growth and Form (1917)
Physics
I was an atheist, finding no reason to postulate the existence of any truths outside of mathematics, physics and chemistry. But then I went to medical school, and encountered life and death issues at the bedsides of my patients. Challenged by one of those patients, who asked "What do you believe, doctor?", I began searching for answers.
