1. On a project, data from several sources arrive in different formats and with gaps. What do you do?

Design a cleaning and standardisation process that can run automatically. Fix the data by hand in a spreadsheet. Just use whichever source looks best.

2. A database query that used to run in a second now takes several minutes. What’s your move?

Look at the execution plan, check the indexes and see how much the data has grown. Schedule it to run overnight so I don’t have to wait. Report it and wait for someone else to fix it.

3. How well do you understand the difference between batch and stream processing?

I know when processing data in batches is enough and when you need to react to events in real time – and I want to design systems like that. I’ve heard the terms, but I’m not sure when to use which. I’ve never really thought about it.

4. Lectures, technical documentation and team projects will all be in English, in an international group. How does that sit with you?

Perfectly – I already read docs and comment my code in English, and I’d enjoy talking through system design with people from other countries. Reading docs is fine, but technical discussions in English are a challenge for me. I’d rather everything was in my own language.

5. You need to process a dataset that won’t fit into a single machine’s memory. Where do you start?

Partition the data and plan distributed processing across several machines. Look for a more powerful computer. Take a smaller sample and hope it’s enough.

6. What interests you most about working with data?

Building reliable infrastructure – data pipelines, warehouses and systems that keep running even when something fails. The finished results and reports that come out of it. Data doesn’t interest me – I prefer other areas of computing.

7. A company stores customers’ personal data. What do you focus on when designing how it’s processed?

Security, access control, anonymisation and compliance with data protection rules. Making the data easy for everyone in the company to get at. That’s for the legal team to worry about.

8. The overnight data load has failed. What do you do?

Dig into the logs, find the root cause and add monitoring so a similar failure gets caught sooner. Rerun it and hope it works this time. Wait for users to complain that data is missing.

9. How would you rate your programming and database skills after your Bachelor’s?

I code confidently, write complex queries and want to move up to designing whole systems. I know the basics, but I’ve got a fair bit to catch up on. Programming has always been a struggle for me.

10. What motivates you most to pursue a Master’s degree in Data Processing Technologies?

The chance to design efficient, scalable data processing systems that organisations rely on to make decisions. The strong demand for data specialists. I’m not sure it’s for me
